Ahead of the closing date for registration on May 31st, the North American Brass Band Summer has confirmed its line up of tutorial staff for its inaugural course in Nova Scotia next month.
Leading tutors
Under the guidance of Musical Director Dr Robert Childs, delegates will have the opportunity to study with some of the brass world’s leading international brass performers and tutors.
Cornet virtuoso Roger Webster will be flying out to deliver a masterclass and provide specialist cornet tuition for the cornet delegates, and will also perform as soloist with the NABBSS Band on one of their lunchtime concerts.
Childs and Perantoni
World renowned American tuba legend Dan Perantoni recently hosted the acclaimed International Tuba & Euphonium Conference at Indiana University, whilst euphonium superstar David Childs needs no introduction to brass band enthusiasts and will be the Artist in Residence for the duration of the course.
David will also be on hand to give individual lessons to players of all instruments, deliver classes, and coach chamber ensembles.
Delegates will also have the opportunity to hear David perform as euphonium soloist as part of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo.
Martin and Harrelson
David Martin is an Associate Professor and Head of Brass at the Université de Montréal and will coach the NABBSS trombone delegates.
Having played with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, David now conduct’s the university’s brass ensemble and is the founding Musical Director of the Griffon Brass Band.
Meanwhile, Helen and Lee Harrelson from US Open Champions Fountain City Brass will look after the euphonium and baritone delegates.
With her outstanding British brass band pedigree, Helen is now a highly well respected brass teacher in Kansas, whilst husband Lee is Artistic Director of Fountain City Brass and Low Brass professor at Missouri Western State University.
Academic studies
Meanwhile, the NABBSS academic role is in the hands of North American Brass Band Association President, Steven Allen.
Having taught at the Britten-Pears School of Advanced Music Studies (Aldeburgh), Oxford, Princeton, Rutgers and Rowan Universities, Steven is now Professor of Music at Rider University and will be resident at NABBSS to lead classes for those interested in both brass band history and theory.
