Death of Kirkbymoorside's inspirational stawart

The death has been announced of Les Maw, an inspirational figure behind the development of Kirkbymoorside Band.

4BR has been informed of the death of Les Maw, one of the inspirational stalwarts behind the development of Kirkbymoorside Town Band.

Les passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday 20th May whilst listening to recorded music. He was 90 years of age.

Influential

A spokesperson told 4BR: "It is hard to put into words just what a hugely influential role Les Maw had within the Kirkbymoorside Town Band.

Without Les, few feel that this little market town on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors would have the band that it does today, with over 100 active musicians, a senior band that flits between Championship and First Section status, and a self sustaining support structure within the local community that bodes well for the future."

Cornet

Les first joined the band at the age of 9 playing the cornet. After a short period away from the area he returned and in the mid-thirties settled into the solo cornet team, a position he was to hold until 1952.

He later became Bandmaster and led the band from Fourth Section to Championship status as well as set up a thriving youth band. He held the position for 36 years and later still gave lessons to youngsters up until the last few weeks of his life.

He was awarded the British Empire Medal in recognition of his long and devoted service, and was Musical Director of the band until his full retirement in 2005.

It is hard to put into words just what a hugely influential role Les Maw had within the Kirkbymoorside Town BandBand spokesperson.

Grateful

The spokesperson added: "Most of the players within the ranks of the current senior band can be grateful for the support and encouragement that Les continued to provide long into his retirement.

Les had remained active throughout his life, was passionate about the band and attended almost every concert. His enthusiasm and appetite for banding never waned and he could still be found at the bandroom at most senior band rehearsals."

Funeral

The funeral will take place at 11.00am on Saturday 31st May at All Saints, Parish Church, Kirkbymoorside.
