As first reported in British Bandsman magazine, the death has been reported of the highly respected journalist and features editor Ron Massey. He was aged 90.
Outstanding
In addition to his outstanding contribution to the reporting of all aspects of the brass band movement, he also helped to raise huge amounts of much needed funds for a number of charitable causes and for his local community.
He was the driving force behind the successful ‘1000 Voices’ charity concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, which rose well over £150,000 for Yorkshire cancer research.
Highly respected
A former euphonium player, Ron Massey was born in Marsden, leaving school to begin a life long working career in the news and printing world, which eventually saw him become a highly respected sub editor and features writer.
He started writing for British Bandsman in 1976, posting his last feature in 2011, aged 87. He was also the Press Officer for both the National Championships of Great Britain and the European Brass Band Championships.
