There may well be an enormous roar to accompany a Welsh win in Dublin on Saturday as the nation's rugby stars battle against Ireland in the Six Nations Rugby international, but in Cardiff, an equally determined group of music lovers are being encouraged to give their vocal support to help save two of the capital's iconic cultural venues.
Under threat
It was recently revealed both St David's Hall (which hosted the European Brass Band Championships in 1986 and 1992) and The New Theatre could be under serious threat after Cardiff Council announced huge budget cuts that could see the sale of both buildings to private consortiums or even closure.
With the Welsh arts community shocked by the news, prior to the rugby match on Saturday at 12.30pm, a 'flashmob' is being organised outside St David's Hall, where 'Calon Lan' and 'Bread of Heaven' will be amongst the music that is sung — accompanied by a brass band.
Sing, sing, sing
Speaking to 4BR, organiser David Hutchings revealed the seriousness of the situation.
"Cardiff Council have already been hard at work researching and even consulting with potential bidders in the run up to the budget consultation which will take place on Thursday 13th February. This why we have to act now to stop the venues being sold off."
He added: "We encourage anybody who cares deeply about the impact that a possible closure of these two venues will have on our cultural heritage to come to St David's Hall with your placards and sing your hearts out to remind the Council why we are the land of song!!!!"
David also encouraged anybody who has film, videoing equipment to bring it along and spread the word via social media.
