We may be getting a bit closer to knowing the identity of the brass band that played on the 1974 album ‘Silk Torpedo’ by The Pretty Things — or maybe not...
Is it Only Love
Since we printed the story about the track, ‘Is it Only Love’ recorded in London in 1973, we have been contacted by the group themselves who have racked their brains to come up with the answer.
Few tricks
Band Manager Mark St. John got in touch but could only tell us that 40 years of hard rocking may have played a few tricks on their collective recall mechanisms.
"We are not 100% certain, but everyone thinks it was the Blackthorpe Colliery brass band that performed on ‘Is It Only Love’, which appeared on the Silk Torpedo album.
It’s such a long time ago, but we are delighted that it remains as popular as ever. We will try to find more information to confirm, but meanwhile — this is all we have. Sorry, I hope this helps you somehow – but it was quite a time ago for a rock band to remember!"

No link
Unfortunately, the name of Blackthorpe Colliery Band doesn’t appear in any old Mineworkers contest programmes we have in 4BR possession, whilst Blackthorpe Colliery itself doesn’t register in National Coal Board records we have accessed either, so could it be someone else entirely?
The mystery continues then....
