The centenary of the tragic Senghenydd Colliery Disaster, which occurred on October 14th 1913, was marked in many mining communities around the country on the weekend, with a number of brass bands playing a part in events.

There was a major commemoration in Wales (see below), where national radio and television covered the unveiling of a new memorial, whilst in another coal mining area in the north east, the Fishburn Band played at a local dedication where colliery and union banners from Fishburn, Deafhill and Thornley were also displayed.
