Childs set to lead Grimethorpe at Albert Hall

Grimethorpe announce that Dr Robert Childs will replace Belgian conductor Luc Vertommen for National Finals.

4BR has been informed that Dr Robert Childs will conduct Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday.

Best interests

Talking exclusively to 4BR, Grimethorpe Band Manager Nigel Dixon said that the decision to ask the former Cory MD to replace Belgian Luc Vertommen had been made in the best interests of all parties concerned.

"Unfortunately things did not work out between the band and Luc with the preparation for our London appearance, and a very difficult decision had to be made.

We are very grateful to Luc and for all the work he has done with the band and we hope to work with him again in the future.

On this occasion however, we felt everyone’s interests were best served with us bringing in a new conductor.”

Confirmation

Meanwhile, Dr Robert Childs confirmed to 4BR that he will take on the responsibility of leading the band at the Albert Hall.

"I have been contacted and have agreed to take Grimethorpe to London.

I know the piece very well indeed and will go up to Yorkshire later today to take my first rehearsal."
