This coming weekend the Enfield Citadel Band will break the mould by performing the world premiere of Dorothy Gates's 'The Salvation Army Lass' in Broxbourne theatre, Herts.
Soundtrack
The work was originally written in 2011 as part of Dorothy Gates's PhD portfolio at the University of Salford and provides the soundtrack to a 17 minute silent movie from 1909.
Gates worked in collaboration with Jospeh Turrin and composed a large scale work which paints vivid pictures of the Salvation Army's early work in the United States of America.
Vivid portrayal
Not at all dissimilar to Ray Steadman-Allen's ‘Victorian Snapshots — On Ratcliff Highway', Gates utilises a piano and extended percussion within the band score to really provide the listener with a vivid portrayal of the various scenes from within the movie.

Terrific project
Commenting to 4BR, Bandmaster Jonathan Corry said: "This has been a terrific project to work on in a very busy time for the band especially after our recent visit to Switzerland.
