24 bands will compete at the 89th West of England Bandsman’s Festival in Bugle, Cornwall on Saturday 15th June.
March to the field
Competitors will set off at 10.00am on the traditional march through the village to the contest field, before taking part in the famous open air contest.
Entries this year range from training bands up to the Championship Section, who will play for the honour of being awarded the £1000 cash prize and the prestigious Royal Trophy, which will be presented, for the 100th time, by Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho OBE.
Royal Trophy
HRH Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, has presented a special certificate to be awarded to the winners of the Royal Trophy in its centenary year and has contributed a foreword to the programme.
Also marking the centenary of the Royal Trophy is the choice of the march of the same name, as a written originally for the Festival in 1927 by William Rimmer.
George Lloyd
The Festival is also marking the centenary of the Cornish composer, George Lloyd, born in St Ives on 28th June 1913, by choosing ‘English Heritage’, as the set work in the Championship Section.
Adjudicator Philip Harper is making his first visit to the event, with two test pieces in the lower sections written by him.
Harper
Bands from all over Cornwall have entered, along with competitors from Hampshire, Surrey and Wiltshire, all making their way to the small Cornish clay country village, as they have done from all over the world since 1912.
