The Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA) has announced details of it 2013 Conducting Weekend Workshops.
Tailored guidance
Following the success of previous years, two new courses, designed for either Advanced Conductors or Youth Band and New/Less Experienced Conductors, will offer delegates tailored guidance and instruction from course tutors Ian Porthouse and Nigel Boddice MBE.
Both events will take place on Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th April at Whitdale Primary School, 55a Whitdalehead Road, Whitburn, West Lothian. EH47 8JU, commencing at 10.00am each day.
Refreshments and buffet lunch is included and the Advanced Conductor Stream will also receive a complimentary score of the focus piece ‘Red Priest’.
Hands on
A SBBA spokesperson told 4BR: "Due to the tailored, ‘hands-on’ nature of the weekend, available spaces are limited in numbers, so it highly recommended that you register your place as soon as possible."

Advanced Conductor Workshop:
Ian Porthouse will lead the Advanced Conductor workshop, supported by the Whitburn Band, and aimed specifically at more experienced conductors.
The two sessions each day will cover various aspects of rehearsing, conducting and interpretation, using Philip Wilby’s ‘Red Priest’ as the focus work.
The cost is £90 and includes refreshments and a buffet lunch for both days, as well as a complimentary copy of the score to ‘Red Priest’.
Youth Band/New and Less Experienced Conductors Workshop:
Nigel Boddice MBE will lead the workshop for Youth Band/New and Less Experienced Conductor workshop, supported by the Tullis Russell Youth Band.
The two sessions each day will cover the key aspects of conducting, including baton technique, rehearsal technique and band motivation.
The cost is £50 and includes refreshments and a buffet lunch for both days.

Post Workshop Support:
To maximise the benefits of the workshops, it is intended to film parts of the sessions. These recordings will then be made available to the delegates for reference and study to help further development their new found conducting skills.
Working Concert Finale:
Both workshops conclude on Sunday 14th April with a short performance and open rehearsal as part of the afternoon workshop sessions.
The ‘working concert’ begins at 3.30pm with members of the public welcome to attend for a nominal entry charge of £3.00.
This draws the busy weekend to a positive and demonstrative close by approximately 5.00pm.

The SBBA spokesperson concluded: "The workshops, partly funded by Creative Scotland funding through the Youth Music Initiative, have proven to offer valuable instruction and insight, with extremely positive feedback received from past attendees."
