If you have ever wondered what qualities are required to become a principal cornet player at the very highest level – then see if there is anyone you know who could possibly fit the bill for getting the PC job at the Royal Opera House.
House band
The Covent Garden ‘house band’ is currently looking for a principal cornet player to meet the demands required of its ‘diverse programme of operas and ballet’.
1,000 hours
According to the job description, those interested must be available for 1,000 hours annually with 860 of those hours spread over a performing season of 47 or 48 weeks.
Annual leave is 5 weeks a year – although scheduled by the orchestral management, whilst they state there are no ‘normal’ hours of work: Instead you should agree to work between 10.00am and the end of an evening performance – Monday to Sunday.
You will be required to play any written cornet parts as well as double on any sub-principal trumpet part (including D & rotary) and sometimes appear as part of a stage band or in costume – from memory.
All that and interestingly, there is not a single mention of the successful applicant having to have had anything to do with a brass band...4BR
Ideal candidate
The ideal candidate (if there is one out there) should have extensive classical training and a very high standard of professional orchestral experience, be a team player, self motivated, reliable, versatile and have good communication skills – as well as be prepared to play at the start of every session.
Personal skills include the ability to understand and speak English and work under pressure...

If you can think of anyone in the banding world who may perhaps give it a go, then why not apply....
