4BR has been informed that Tongwynlais Temperance has announced that star euphonium player Martyn Patterson has resigned from the band.
High
After a decade in the solo euphonium seat he leaves on a high after helping the Welsh outfit to a historic fourth place finish at the National Finals in London last year – a result that sees the band pre-qualified for the Albert hall in 2013.
An integral playing member since 2002, he has been the focal point of many musical initiatives as well as contesting successes as Tongwynlais has risen up through the contesting rankings, helped by his numerous prize winning solo contributions along the way.
Fantastic musician
A spokesperson told 4BR: "Martyn has been a fantastic musician, arranger and conductor for many years.
Some of those talents have taken a back seat to his playing commitments in recent times, so after considerable thought he has decided to relinquish his position with the band."
Fond memories
Martyn meanwhile added: "It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable 10 years with the highs and lows you'd expect in banding!
I will have many fond memories to cherish such as the first ever performance at the National Finals and British Open and also the winning performance of 'Music for Battle Creek' and soloist prize at the Scottish Open in 2011."
Balance
He continued: "However, in the last year I have found it difficult to successfully balance my professional life and conducting career with the bands increasing commitments, and after a lot of thought I feel now is the right time to find a replacement."
Band Chairman, Jason Bevan said: "I respect Martyn’s honesty and reasons for leaving. Nevertheless his departure will have a big impact on Tongwynlais and he will be sadly missed. Everyone wishes him the very best in his future banding and conducting career.
He is a consistently world class player and a totally dedicated bandsman."
...it’s been a pleasure to share the stage with many wonderful musicians, friends and family and I wish it will not be the last time I will play with the band on the stageMartyn Patterson
Replacement
He continued: "We’ve obviously discussed his exit from the band and have begun actively seeking a replacement ahead of the Welsh Open in February."
Martyn concluded: "I'd like to publicly thank everyone associated with Tongwynlais – it’s been a pleasure to share the stage with many wonderful musicians, friends and family and I wish it will not be the last time I will play with the band on the stage."
