National Finals countdown — 3 days to go

Can Brighouse & Rastrick join a very select National Club at the Albert Hall on Saturday?

Brighosue

Brighouse & Rastrick is the latest in a pretty long list of bands that have travelled to the Royal Albert Hall looking to achieve a National hat-trick of wins.

Amazingly, it is the third time that they have tried (although one didn’t really count).

Select

After their success under the direction of Professor David King in 2010 & 2011, they will be looking to join a very select club that until now has only admitted four members.

Foden’s and Black Dyke can lay claim to two hat tricks each, whilst Cory and Desford have one each.

Three into four

Strangely, once it has been done, winning it a fourth time seems positively easy (both Black Dyke hat-tricks were followed by a fourth win, as was Desford’s), although winning it six times in a row (as Foden’s did) is simply mind boggling,

Failed

Those who have tried and failed are as follows:

Wingates Temperance:
Wins: 1906 & 1907
Hat-trick attempt: 3rd

St Hilda Colliery:
Wins: 1920 & 1921
Hat-trick attempt: 4th

CWS Manchester
Wins: 1962 & 1963
Hat-trick attempt: 3rd

Brighouse & Rastrick
Wins: 1968 & 1969
Hat-trick attempt: Forced to compete in 1970 World Championship

Brighouse & Rastrick
Wins: 1997 & 1998
Hat-trick attempt: 2nd

Williams Fairey
Wins: 2002 & 2003
Hat-trick attempt: 10th

Grimethorpe Colliery
Wins: 2006 & 2007
Hat-trick attempt: 7th (off the number 1 draw!)

Black Dyke
Wins: 2008 & 2009
Hat-trick attempt: 8th
