Euphonium star David Childs is to be one of the star attractions at the forthcoming Cardiff International Wind Band Festival based at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff.

Stars

The inaugural event takes place on 27th October and will feature solo performances not only from the former Cory player, but also Black Dyke principal cornet Richard Marshall, percussionist Simone Rebello, David Crolwey (Oboe) and Gerard McChrystal (Saxophone).

Hosted by the Cardiff & Vale Youth Wind Orchestra, over 200 young musicians will perform in five separate wind ensembles, with each of the soloists working closely with them in preparation for the Gala Concert at the college’s Dora Stoutzker Concert Hall later the same night.

Inspire

David Childs, who has taken up the role of Musical Director of the Cardiff & Vale Youth Wind Orchestra told 4BR: "This is a unique event designed to inspire our young musicians whilst providing a performance opportunity in a prestigious setting with a world class roster of soloists.

To hear Richard Marshall, Simone Rebello, Gerard McChrystal and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales’ David Cowley in one single concert will be a phenomenal experience for all involved."

Joining forces

The Cardiff & Vale Youth Wind Orchestra will be joined by the Abraham Darby Academy Showband, Greater Gwent Youth Modern Ensemble, Northampton County Youth Concert Band, and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama’s very own Wind Orchestra.

David added: "The Gala Concert will feature five 25-minute programmes from the five ensembles, each featuring a guest soloist. The idea is that whilst one orchestra plays, the other four ensembles will be part of the audience providing a great opportunity for us all to learn from and be inspired by each other."

Tribute

He concluded: "I’m very proud to be a part of this Festival, but must pay tribute to both our Artistic Director Sean O’Neil who’s been the driving force behind this project, and the generosity of our principal sponsors, the Buffet Wind Group, Yamaha, Ev-entz & GK Design."
