A 19 year old orchestral trombonist with a desire to play with a top flight brass band has won a prestigious award at the recent Haverhill Sinfonia Soloist Competition.
Worldwide
The international event attracted performers from all around the world, with Michael Buchanan from Newbury claiming the £325 award as the highest placed brass player – a prize that will also see him perform as a featured soloist in concert with the City of Southampton Orchestra in the future.
Michael is currently studying music at Cambridge University and although he has never played in a brass band, it isn't out of choice as he told 4BR.
Never arose
"I was brought up through the local music services in Berkshire and so the opportunity never arose," he said.
"I would love to be able to play with a top flight brass band, as the musicianship is amazing. Perhaps if I get the chance with my studies I will be able to. It’s certainly an avenue I would like to explore."
I’m thrilled at the award and looking forward to being able to perform as a soloist with the City of Southampton Orchestra. If a brass band is looking for a trombonist though I will certainly be tempted!Michael Buchanan
Tomasi
Michael’s recital performance which included the Tomasi Trombone Concerto saw him impress the panel of adjudicators headed by Haverhill Sinfonia MD, Kevin Hill MBE, Caroline Palmer of the Guildhall School of Music, and Gary Ryan, Professor at the Royal College of Music.
Tempted
Michael added: "I’m thrilled at the award and looking forward to being able to perform as a soloist with the City of Southampton Orchestra. If a brass band is looking for a trombone soloist to perform with them though I will certainly be tempted!"
