The Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA) will be presenting a one-day workshop for tutors of training, junior and youth brass bands, on 30th September at The Couper Institute, Glasgow.

Targeted

Led by the inspirational duo of Alan Fernie and Lynda Nicholson, together with the recently formed Gorbals Youth Brass Band, the specifically targeted itinerary takes place from 9.45am — 5.00pm at The Couper Institute, 86 Clarkston Road, Glasgow, G44 3DA.

Support initiative

Following the success of the recent Conducting Workshop, the SBBA Tutor Workshop forms part of its continued series of support initiatives, providing experienced guidance on the many areas of developing a young brass band.

Aspects

The workshop is structured to cover a wide variety of tutoring aspects, including:

• Structuring the first lesson
• Selecting appropriate repertoire
• Approaches to group tuition
• Demonstrations of applying the teaching methods with the assistance of the Gorbals Youth Brass Band
• Question & Answer open forum

Aims

The sessions are designed to ensure that tutors can put the fundamental groundwork in place to cover basic playing techniques and suggested practice structures.

It is hoped that the suggestions and advice given will enable delegates to achieve the best from their own young instrumentalists both individually and collectively.

Ideas and advice
