4BR has been informed of the death of (William) Arthur Chapman, aged 86, following a very short illness. He died at Brighton's Sussex County Hospital.
Arthur
Arthur, as he was always known, was the retired Bandmaster of the Brighton Congress Hall Band of The Salvation Army — a position he held in total for 25 years.
Following his retirement from the band he went on to enjoy contesting success with numerous South-Coast bands, including Horsham, Mid-Sussex, Uckfield and Burgess Hill, but most notably Hangleton.
In 1999, Arthur was presented with a certificate in recognition of more than 50 years service to brass banding4BR
Half century of service
In 1999, Arthur was presented with a certificate in recognition of more than 50 years service to brass banding by the then scaba Chairman, John Taylor.
He was a regular supporter of local SCABA events and both the British Open and National Finals, very often with his son Lyndon, Sales Manager for The Buffet Group,(Besson).
His passing is mourned by his family and the banding fraternity.
