This coming Friday morning the salty air of Southend will be filled with the sound of 2000 choristers, aged from seven to 80, singing a specially-commissioned piece of music by acclaimed composer, Tolga Kashif, as the Olympic Torch reaches the sea in the town.
Light shine
‘Let Your Light Shine’ will also be backed by the sound of current Yorkshire, English and European champions Black Dyke – as the band has recorded the accompanying music to be played for a cast that is so big in size, recent rehearsals have had to be held in the main grandstand of Southend United Football Club!

Queen
Kashif, who has collaborated in the past with rock band, Queen, has been described by Brian May as, ‘someone with a unique view and a new dream' and will lead the music making on the town’s famous pier, with the 83 meter long, seven story high choir at his command.
Black Dyke recorded the music a couple of months ago and although they won’t be in Southend on the day, the sound of the European champions will be heard loud and clear.
Ambitious
The ambitious idea has been conceived by arts organisation Metal, which through the work and inspiration of the likes of well known brass musician Ian Brownbill has become one of the most innovative producers of large scale theatre and musical events in the country.
Biggest and most exciting
Metal's Managing Director, Colette Bailey told 4BR: "This has been our biggest and most exciting project to date. Bringing together 2000 singers is not without its logistical and musical challenges but with Black Dyke providing the music we are sure it will be a memorable occasion for all those involved and all that come to witness it taking place."
