When the Oldham Evening Chronicle recently reported the uncertain future of some of the Whit Friday contest in their area, a player from Greenalls Band decided to do something about it.

Second horn player Sylvia Taylor set up an online petition to gain support for the continuation of the contests and at present close on 400 people have signed up to show their solidarity.

The local MP has already taken up the cause as well as Mark Herman, producer of ‘Brassed Off!’, some of the cast members from the film, the presenter and comedienne Sue Perkins and the television choir master Gareth Malone.
