Foden's has once again claimed the Tameside Whit Friday honours.

Tenth title

Foden's and Michael Fowles took their tenth Whit Friday crown in eleven years on Friday evening and in doing so they took the title by some margin.

President Fowles

Performing their familiar Whit Friday march, 'The President', the Cheshire outfit competed at all eleven Tameside venues.

Victories at Audenshaw, Broadoak Hotel, Carrbrook, Denton, Stalybridge, Stalybridge Celtic and Upper Mossley give the band a guaranteed £3,350 in prize money.

With runners up spots at Droylsden, Heyrod and Hurst Cross, it meant the only contest the band didn't feature in the prizes was at Tame Valley.

Seven grander

With the overall first prize of £2,500 added to fine individual prize winning performances, Foden's banked £6,690 within the borough before going to Uppermill and picking up the £1,000 first prize and the best euphonium, which meant an overall return of £7,720.

Consistency

Foden's Andy Rolfe was more than happy how the night had gone when speaking to 4BR, and cited the importance of consistency as key to their success.

"The band is very pleased to have retained the Tameside Whit Friday crown once again. The day remains an important event in our diary and I think the band was at the top its game for the whole night."

Andy also paid tribute to the dedicated work of MD, Mike Fowles, euphonium star Glyn Williams and the band's principal cornet, Mark Wilkinson.

"Mike continues to lead the band with distinction and pushes us all the way. The night was a real team effort and our thanks to Glyn planning the route and a special mention has to go to Mark who never missed a note as he picked up individual cornet prizes along the way."

Faireys & Leyland

Fairey's led by Garry Cutt also played 'The President' and had to settle for second place courtesy of a single victory at Droylsden, and four second spots at Audenshaw, Broadoak Hotel, Stalybridge Celtic and Upper Mossley.

With two thirds at Hurst Cross and Stalybridge and they just edged out Leyland into third

Royal Tiger

The Brass in Concert and North West Area Champion, conducted by Leigh Baker, marched down to their contesting venues performing their signature tune of 'Royal Tiger' composed by Harold Moss and whilst they had to be content with third place overall, their performances of 'The Wizard' saw them take first prizes at Heyrod and Hurst Cross, a second at Stalybridge and a hat trick of third and fourth. places

Meanwhile, Ashton-under-Lyne took the Local prize for the fifth year in a row after they competed at all the Tameside venues performing 'The Wizard'.

Not only did Foden's play at all of the Tameside venues, they hot-footed it to Uppermill to take the first prize and bank over seven grand for the night4BR

The full results are published with thanks to the excellent work of Vanessa Rothwell at Tameside Council.
