Creetown Silver Band held a social evening to mark the retirement after an incredible 64 years of continuous banding commitment of Harry Heaver, at the age of 93.
Boy's Brigade
Harry started playing in a Boys Brigade in Widnes, and at the age of 15, while working in Longwith Colliery, he joined the work’s band as a cornet player.
After distinguished war service he moved to Dumfries and Galloway to work with the Forestry Commission and soon joined the local band.

Star
Harry starred on both cornet and flugel horn, later moving to horn and latterly to baritone. Up to his retirement, the band’s honorary President had one of the best attendance records, seldom missing a rehearsal or concert.
At the social evening MD Stuart McNab, outlined Harry’s career and banding contribution before revealing the new trophy which the committee had obtained to mark Harry’s amazing service.
Award
A spokesperson told 4BR: "The ‘Harry Heaver Award for Meritorious Service’ will be presented annually to the band member who most fulfils the description."
The inaugural recipient was long serving member, Leo McClymont.

In reply Harry thanked everyone for the evening, the many years of enjoyment and companionship. His final duty was to present Kyle Fitzsimmons with the ‘Junior Progress Shield’ as the most improved junior in the past year.
