Grimethorpe Colliery Band has been overwhelmed by the response to its Youth Band initiative which was launched just a few days ago through an announcement on 4BR.
Amazing
Band spokesperson Nigel Dixon told 4BR: "It’s been amazing. It just goes to show how many people want to be part of the Grimethorpe organisation. The ethos is about making it open to everyone aged 19 or younger at Grade 4 standard. This is about inspiring all young players."
Problem
The response has given the band a problem though – although it is one they welcome.
"We now know just what a huge task lays ahead," he added. "Everyone at Grimethorpe is determined to make it succeed. We want to be at the forefront of an innovative approach to encourage inclusive participation from anyone who wants to play in a brass band."

London trip
Part of that approach has seen members of the band take time off from work to travel to Newham in London this week to help inspire children from one of the capital’s most economically deprived areas.
"It’s been a real privilege," Nigel said. "We came as part of an innovative approach to help bring music to children from all backgrounds in local primary schools.
With the help of a great bus load of children from our area in Yorkshire it’s been a great way to reach out to youngsters and show them just how much fun can be had making music."
