4BR has been informed of the death of former GUS trombonist Maxwell Thornton.

4BR has been informed of the death of Maxwell Thornton, one of the leading trombonists of the post war period in UK banding.

He died peacefully at home on 29th March, aged 84.

Gifted

A gifted soloist and section player he came down from Scotland in 1948 to play as principal trombone for the Munn & Feltons, later GUS Bands, helping them to claim National, Open and World Championship successes.

He was a wonderful natural musician. He had a golden sound and innate musicianship. He was a fine player and an equally fine manLloyd Landry

Fellow GUS player Lloyd Landry told 4BR: "He was a wonderful natural musician. He had a golden sound and innate musicianship. He was a fine player and an equally fine man."

He leaves a daughter Rosemary.

Funeral

The funeral will be held at Kettering Crematorium on Tuesday 10th April at 3.45pm
