Read's Lancashire surprise

One of the great 'Kings of Brass' has enjoyed a deserved surprise.

More than 120 past and present members and tutors of the Lancashire Youth Brass Band (LYBB) turned out for a surprise concert to mark the retirement of its Musical Director Peter Read.

Legends

Conducted by Peter’s great 'Kings of Brass' friend, Les Beevers, performers in the specially formed 'Peter Read Reunion Band', included Fairey’s legend, Brian Taylor, John Doyle, Martin Armstrong, Michael Wells, Graham Justin and Gareth Maybury.

Best known in recent years as the principal cornet of 'Kings of Brass' from 1994 to 2001, Peter conducted the LYBB from 1981 until his retirement in 2011.

Outstanding career

During his outstanding playing career, Peter played principal cornet with Besses o’th Barn, Rochdale Wilsons, British Aerospace Wingates and Brighouse & Rastrick.

The surprise concert and party was compered by LYBB’s new Musical Director, Dave Little, who deftly guided the audience through the band’s history and exploits.

I felt completely overwhelmed and humbled by the gesturePeter Read

No idea

Peter later said: "The band reheared and performed brilliantly on a programme of music which reflected the repertoire performed over the years, including Curnow’s 'Blenheim Flourishes' and Ball’s 'The Kingdom Triumphant'."

He added: "I had no idea such an event had been planned. When Les directed us into a room filled with people and then a full band suddenly struck up with the march 'County Palatine' which Les then continued to conduct, I realised what was happening.

I felt completely overwhelmed and humbled by the gesture."
