Radio 2 Young Brass Award winner Ross Knight has spoken of his delight at becoming the first recipient of the prestigious BBC award at the RNCM Festival of Brass on the weekend.
Outstanding
The 19 year Scotsman produced an outstanding performance of Rodney Newton’s ‘Capriccio’ to gain the honour – although he still had the time and energy to perform with fellow finalists Carnoustie & District Youth Band.
"It came as a surprise," he said modestly. "I worked really hard in preparing for the final and was happy with my performance. I’m now looking forward to performing with the BBC Concert Orchestra hopefully later this year as part of my prize."
Rich praise
The second year Royal Academy student’s performance drew rich praise from the judging panel, and proved to be a popular winner with the knowledgeable audience at the RNCM in Manchester.
"It was great to win of course, and hopefully this will give my career a real boost," he added.
Ross is currently studying under the great Patrick Harrild and hopes that following the completion of his studies he will be able to follow his mentor into the professional orchestral world.
"I want to pursue a professional tuba career – anywhere in the world if I can. I still enjoy playing with Carnoustie when I can of course, but I think my long term future is in the orchestral world."
Next step
The next step will hopefully see Ross claim a place with the European Youth Orchestra in the coming months.
"I’m due to go for auditions, so I’m hoping that this win will help persuade them I’m well worth a place," he said before leaving for yet more intensive rehearsal at the Academy.
