The Whitwell Band secured an emotional podium finish at the Butlins Contest in Skegness over the weekend.
Inspirational
And whilst there was a great deal of celebration at claiming 3rd place against a high class field of rivals, the band were also saddened by the fact that it was achieved without their inspirational Bb Bass player, Richard Askew, who died following a short battle with cancer during the week before the contest.
Thanks
A spokesperson told 4BR: "We would like to thank the North East Midlands Brass Band Association for the tribute that they paid to Richard during the results ceremony. The comments that they made were heartfelt and much appreciated. Richard’s son, Ben also on Bb Bass, played on the day in what was a very emotional performance."

Honour
Past and present members of the band provided the music during Richard’s funeral service at St Luke’s Church in Shireoaks.
Band Chairman Stephen Watkins added: "It was an honour for Whitwell to give Richard a send-off he would have enjoyed. He was a constant source of support, encouragement and humour and will be greatly missed by everyone in the bandroom."
