Bolsover Brass Band Summer School has announced that prize winning composer Matthew Hall, will be writing a piece for the inaugural course.
New work
The composer in residence with the current All England International Masters champion Tredegar, will compose a new work to open the end of course concert.
Great knack
Artistic Director Ian Porthouse told 4BR: "My plan is that the piece will become a regular feature each year, a sort of theme tune to the course."
Ian added: "Matt has the great knack of producing works that are stimulating and exciting to play – and I’m sure this new composition will reflect what I hope will be just as an exciting and stimulating week to be part of."
Matt’s ‘Legends of Cyfarthfa’ claimed the Brass in Concert ‘Best New Composition’ Award last year, and is delighted to be able to produce a brand new piece for the course.

Signature work
He told 4BR: "It’s great to be asked to produce a signature work for the Bolsover Summer School. I know Ian wants it to reflect a week of musical stimulation and excitement, so I’ve got my thinking cap on already!"
It’s not the only musical treat in store though, as Ian revealed to 4BR: "Along with a new work by Ken Downie and repertoire spanning the history of original music for brass band.
I’m sure there will be music for all tastes. We also have some real fun items programmed, so I will be looking for some real characters that will no doubt pick themselves over the first few days or even hours on arrival!"
