It's been a jet setting couple of weeks for composer Tom Davoren, who has been assisting Jason Katsikaris and his Gunnedah Shire Band to success at the recent FABB Australasian Open Festival.
Funding
Tom was able to fly to Australia thanks to funding provided by the British Council, and the trip has been a huge success for the Welshman.
The BTM Band conductor composed and arranged three pieces for the band’s Australian themed entertainment programme, 'A Sunburnt Country', alongside repertoire from Andy Scott and Morten Laurisden.
Title winners
Under Jason’s baton Gunnadah took the Entertainment title and the $5,000 first prize as well as coming runner up in the test piece ‘Open’ Championship.
Speaking to 4BR, Tom said. "It has been an amazing trip to come out to Australia thanks to the British Council, and to work with such a great band. It was a particular treat to hear the amazing Kristy Rowe give the premiere of 'When Sparks Fly', and to see her win the ‘Best Brass Soloist’ Award."
He added: "I’m also delighted that Kristy will record my new baritone concerto next year too. I can’t think of a better player to perform it."
I can't thank Jason and Gunnedah enough for their fantastic playing, hospitality and progressive outlook. FABB and Rick Casagrande run a brilliant festival on the Gold CoastTom Davoren
Awards
Kristy's virtuoso performance was not the only individual prize winning contribution to the band’s success at the Twin Towns Services Club in Coolangatta, with principal cornet player John Lewis taking the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ Award in the Open section of the contest.
More trophies
Tom added: "There are now two more trophies to find a place for on 'Gunny's trophy shelf alongside their entertainment Champions trophy.
