Foden’s Composer in Residence Andy Scott will be heading to Norway this weekend to listen to Stavanger Band give the world premiere of his new work, ‘Madiba’.
The composition will feature in the band’s programme at the SIDDIS Entertainment Contest in a 25-minute programme of his music.
Work and pleasure
Andy will be mixing work with pleasure too as he is due to adjudicate in the First Section alongside Grethe W. Tonheim.
It’s been a busy time for Andy, with the Glyn Williams CD ‘The Lure of the Red Jacket’ featuring his compositions recently being launched, whilst he has also written three new short pieces for Foden’s and has been collaborating with Allan Withington and Stavanger Band on its forthcoming SIDDIS programme.
Great work
"Working with Allan has been great!2 he told 4BR. "Over the last four months we have met and developed ideas, arriving with a programme that includes ‘Battle of Barossa’, a new version of ‘My Mountain Top’, some choreographed bridge sections called ‘No Mans Land’ and finishing with ‘Madiba’, a Stavanger commission which is an uplifting afro-cuban groove".
He added: "I’m learning so much through having the opportunity to work with top class players at Foden’s and beyond."
New wave
Andy is also encouraged by the fact that other leading bands are working with the new wave of talented brass composers.
"I welcome the news that Faireys has appointed Simon Dobson as its Composer in Residence. Hopefully other bands will follow suit, giving composers the opportunity to develop their compositional style through true musical collaboration."
I’m looking forward to working with Stavanger, seeing a beautiful part of the world, and experiencing first hand the musical creativity that is associated with the SIDDIS competitionAndy Scott
Bad tempered
Meanwhile, Andy goes to London on Thursday for the UK Launch of his ‘The Bad Tempered Flute – the Flute Music of Andy Scott’ before hot footing it back to Manchester Airport for the flight to Stavanger on Friday morning.
He concluded: "I’m looking forward to working with Stavanger, seeing a beautiful part of the world, and experiencing first hand the musical creativity that is associated with the SIDDIS competition."
