For a composer almost as well known for his inventive approach to his hairstyles as he has been for his innovative compositions, Simon Dobson has revealed that recently he has been able to combine both aspects together!
Hair care
Talking to 4BR, the Cornishman revealed that he has enjoyed a very busy Summer composing and arranging – although he still had time for that bit of musical hair care treatment.
He chuckled when asked that just like Cheryl Cole, that he was worth it...
Concerto
"I hope so!," he laughed. "I've just completed a cycle of seven works, each for a different brass ensemble to be performed involving spoken words in Cornish workshops next year, as well as my first ‘Tuba Concerto’ for the ever innovative Nick Etheridge.
It’s in four movements and scored for what is basically a rock band, plus synthesiser and horns and will be recorded in a London studio in the next few months."
King Blues
All that and he has even managed to squeeze in time with his talented wife Josie and her band The King Blues.
"That’s been hectic," he revealed. "This week their new single, ‘The Future’s not what it used to be’ was Zane Lowe’s 'hottest record in the world' on Radio 1 and featured some trumpet parts I recorded for the band early this summer."
I also spent some time producing and wrote the music for one of their new tracks, '5 bottles of shampoo'Simon Dobson
Hair today?
And the hair care element?
"I also spent some time producing and wrote the music for one of their new tracks, '5 bottles of shampoo'," he revealed. "The album charted at No. 31, so you never know, I might get a hair care sponsorship out of it!"
Simon has also been buy with his funk band 'Freshly Squeezed' playing over 20 shows during the past few months, although he will put those performances on hold as he renews his Norwegian banding connections in the next few days as he travels to work with Oslofjord Band at the SIDDIS competition in Stavanger and be the guest conductor at the Forres Msuikkorps school band seminar.
Break?
Any chance of a break then?
"Not really," he added. "With Brass in Concert with Whitburn, adjudication trips in Europe, wind orchestra concerts in Switzerland, a new ‘Trombone Concerto’ for Peter Moore to complete for the RNCM Festival of Brass, I think the next six months are pretty well planned out!"
No wonder his hair needs a bit of loving care too...
