4BR Quiz: British Open Quiz — Thursday

The third of our British Open puzzlers as we head towards Birmingham…

4BR

Well, well, well – it looks as if our devious little Welsh quiz elf found a British Open puzzle that did take some working out yesterday.

Wednesday answer

Our question of: 'What is the British Open connection between a test piece with a watery ending, a pugilist’s auditorium, a four time Open winning conductor and Barry John – the greatest rugby union fly half ever…', proved to be much more difficult to piece together.

Lots and lots of answers but so many so far off the mark.

The answer

The answer – all with a British open connection remember, was of course, ‘King’.

‘Le Roi d’Y’s’ was the 1990 test piece with an ending that sees the floodgates open and drown half the city; the pugilist’s auditorium was the King’s Hall at Belle Vue (used for boxing matches and the stage on which bands played); the four time winning conductor was David King – and the greatest fly half of them all was for ever known as ‘The King’ after his exploits with the British Lions in New Zealand in 1971.

The lucky winner was David Birch.

Wednesday quiz connection:

Today we have tried even harder, because we have a great prize thanks to our friends at Denis Wick.

Great prize

The winner picked out of the hat tonight will be able to get their hands on the Denis Wick mouthpiece of their choice – brand harry spankers and as shiny as a golden Krugerrand.

From soprano to tuba players – it’s a great prize!

what is the British Open cinematic connection between a trumpet playing judge who has made a single appearance in the box, a test piece on which Roy Newsome has won and the brilliant children’s magician and entertainer Ali Bongo – the Shriek of Araby!4BR

The question:

So put your thinking caps on and tell us what is the British Open cinematic connection between a trumpet playing judge who has made a single appearance in the box, a test piece on which Roy Newsome has won and the brilliant children’s magician and entertainer Ali Bongo – the ‘Shriek of Araby’!

You must tell what that cinematic connection is and how you got the answer!

It’s a cracking prize – but you will have to put on your thinking caps to win it.

There is a link we promise…
