The Leyland Band has announced that the all-star euphonium pairing of Steve Walsh and Riki McDonnell will join them in time for the British Open in Birmingham next month.
Moved quickly
The band has had to move quickly to fill the vacancy created by the departure of David Thornton, and wasted no time in contacting Steve, who has recently left the Brighouse & Rastrick.
Pure class
Jason Katsikaris, who will be conducting Leyland at Symphony Hall told 4BR: "Steve is pure class. I'm thrilled to hear that he will be lending his talents to us in Birmingham!"
Jason was also on hand to assist when Leyland learnt that Bill Millar would not be available for the contest, suggesting that Kiwi virtuoso Riki might be able to 'catch a lift' with him from Australia!
We are delighted to welcome him and Steve to the bandroom for what is unquestionably the highlight of our contesting calendarIain McKnight, Leyland Band
Revered
"Riki has a reputation that, quite rightly, is revered by musicians around the world," said band administrator, Iain McKnight. "We are delighted to welcome him and Steve to the bandroom for what is unquestionably the highlight of our contesting calendar."
The band also welcome Ruth Stones on first horn, who until recently played solo horn with Wingates and who is currently studying at the RNCM in Manchester.
