BFBB makes a difference

The work of BFBB Liaison Officer Terry Luddington is already making a big difference.

Writing grant applications can be a daunting task when you are managing a busy band – this is where the British Federation of Brass Bands can ‘Make A Difference’ for member bands.

Help

Liaison Officer, Terry Luddington, has just helped the UniBrass team to a £7,750 award from ‘Grant for the Arts’ to fund professional workshops for the forthcoming 2011 Championships and a new commission for UniBrass 2012.

Plenty of scope

Terry told 4BR: "Every year around £5M of lottery funding is awarded to the music art form through Grants for the Arts, in recent years only 1% (around £50k) of this has gone to the brass band sector."

He added: "There is plenty of scope for bands to increase their share of the available funds and a key part of my role is to assist bands with their applications. This has been made much easier now as the online application process allows me to work directly with the bands on their applications over the internet."

Appeal

For UniBrass the University of Lancaster Music Society started the application online, describing the work of the Society and their plans for the first UniBrass Championships.

Terry was then able to work on the two year budget and articulate the detailed artistic aims for the project that would appeal to the funder.

Encourage

The Liaison Officer is keen to encourage bands to apply: "Grants for the Arts is one of the best cultural funding schemes available, around 45% of all applications are successful, if you apply for up to £10k you will get a result within 6 weeks, over £10k will take 12 weeks."
