It appears that within the ranks of Marsden Silver Prize Band these days, alongside the local stalwarts, you’ll find plenty of very talented young players.
Young talent
The Band’s recent successes and hard work ethos means that they are now attracting some of the upcoming young players from a bit further afield.
Demanding
At the recent Butlins Mineworkers Championship, new solo euphonium Emily Braverman, who is a student at the RNCM in Manchester, was hailed as the best euphonium soloist of the day in Darrol Barry’s set test piece 'Requiems', which included the demanding movement dedicated to euphonium legend Geoffrey Whitham.
Marsden were also fortunate to be helped out at Butlins by Steve Cavanagh (yet another RNCM student) on second baritone, who covered for his younger brother.

Radio 2 Final
16 year old Mike Cavanagh was busy back in Manchester competing in the BBC Young Brass Soloist semi finals, where he secured himself a place in the Final later this month.
A band spokesperson told 4BR: "Glyn Williams and Marsden Band are very proud of Mike and are already planning a trip to the RNCM to support him in the Finals on 19th February."
