St Mary’s Band Club, Sydney, Australia instigated a 1 year scholarship for Australasian Band Conductors in 2009.
During the past year the 2010 conducting scholar, Matthew van Emmerik, has directed the St Mary’s Band with distinction, winning both the Keller Band of the Year and the City of Penrith Eisteddfods.
The Scholarship
St Mary’s Band Manager and Club Director, Mr. Ken Bradley, informed 4BRDU: “Following the success of the inaugural conducting scholarship program in 2010, St Mary’s Band Club is once again offering a one year Australasian Band Conductors scholarship for 2011. The ABC scholar will receive regular conducting tuition and practical performance workshops with the music advisor to St Mary’s Band Club, Professor David King and will also receive a stipends bursary for one year.

The 2011 ABC conducting scholar will also be offered a residency with the St Mary’s Band and membership and access to the state-of-the-art facilities owned and operated by St Mary’s Band Club in Western Sydney."
St Mary’s Band Club is recognised in Australasia as the ‘home of brass bands’ and provides patronage to educational and artistic band musicianship events including regular National Australia Brass workshops and also the ‘Keller International Brass Musician of the Year’ festival – the most prestigious band musicianship solo competition in the banding calendar.
