John Golland Award

Invitations are requested for composers to submit works for the RNCM John Golland Award.

4BR has been informed that composers aged 18 or over are invited to submit new, or previously unperformed, works for British style brass band, to be given workshop performances during the RNCM Festival of Brass between the 28th – 30th January next year.

Eight minutes

Selected works should be a maximum of eight minutes duration and up to six works will be selected, depending on length and complexity, for performance on Saturday 29th January by current English National Champion Fairey (Geneva) Band.

This will take the form of a £500 sum and an invitation to write a short work for brass band that will open one of the concerts in the 2012 FestivalOrganisers

Award

The selection panel will also select one composer as the recipient of the second John Golland Award.

The Royal Northern College of Music’s Festival of Brass aims to provide a unique opportunity for world renowned brass soloists, bands and ensembles to perform the finest and most original brass compositions from the past 100 years.

Celebration

The 2011 Festival, which celebrates the 70th birthday year of composer Derek Bourgeois, will also feature the music of Peter Meechan and works commissioned for leading youth band organisations.

The festival will also highlight the world renowned Venezuelan Brass Ensemble, in a gala concert at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.

It will also welcome the massed ranks of the Cornwall and Greater Gwent Youth Bands as well as festival regulars Black Dyke, Cory, Foden’s, Grimethorpe and Leyland, plus the RNCM’s own ensembles.

John Golland submissions

Three copies of the full score and a complete set of performing material should be submitted, preferably in Sibelius format.

The score and parts should be laid out with the conventional transpositions and clefs and sent, together with a completed application form, available from the Festival administrator:
