The Stannington Band is to feature in the premiere of a newly written symphony next month.
Mastermind
'A Symphony for Yorkshire', will feature over two hundred musicians from across the county in an ambitious project masterminded by composer Benjamin Till in conjunction with the BBC.
MD Derek Renshaw, told 4BR: "We contacted the BBC several months ago to say we were interested in the project. Benjamin Till came along to one of our rehearsals and we were delighted when he told us that he wanted the band to be involved."
Tired musicians
Each band, ensemble and soloist recorded their parts separately in Leeds last month.
Derek added: "The evening recording session was demanding but the players got through it with remarkable perseverance and good humour. Inevitably, schedules ran over so it was nearly midnight by the time we finished recording. Our percussionists then had to record their parts, so some very weary musicians made their way back to Sheffield in the early hours of the following day!"
The premiere will be broadcast on the BBC on 1st August — appropriately enough as it will be 'Yorkshire Day'4BR
Grand finale
For their part, the band was filmed on a very windswept hillside in the nearby picturesque location of High Bradfield, whilst a grand finale featuring all the musicians will be shot in Sheffield on 11th July.
The premiere will be broadcast on the BBC on 1st August – appropriately enough as it will be 'Yorkshire Day'.
