One of the most significant developments of recent years has been the decision by the Salvation Army to share access to the riches of the Army’s repertoire with the wider banding community.
Not only did it make this splendid music available to audiences everywhere but it opened up the relationship across what had been a virtually unbridgeable divide.
I well recall when I was banding in Essex in the 1960s and our conductor was also bandmaster of the local corps and Eric Ball our President, we put on a concert entirely of Eric Ball’s music with the composer conducting. We hoped to open with “Star Lake”.
Permission was adamantly refused. Who benefited? Happily this rigidity is a thing of the past and the music of the Salvation Army has the widest possible currency. Everyone gains.
Tonight’s programme taps some of the riches I referred to earlier, most but not all of my choices being played by Salvationists, as it happens. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.
