NABBC Convention success

The National Association of Brass Band Conductors enjoyed themselves at their ecent AGM — thanks to some expert tuition.

The National Association of Brass Band Conductors held its Annual Convention on Sunday the 16th May at Bispham High School, Arts College, Blackpool when it was reported that a great day was had by all.

Cornet workshop

With the formalities of the association's AGM completed it was time for the first workshop of the day when, sponsored by Yamaha UK, Russell Gray presented a 'Cornet Workshop' and showed that a band, well at least a cornet section, didn't actually need a conductor to bring them in or indeed finish together, even with their eyes closed!

Percussion highlight

A 'Percussion Workshop' followed, directed by Andrea Price, Black Dyke's principal percussionist. This was a real " hands-on" experience as Andrea triggered a number of thoughts and ideas as to how the percussion sections of bands might be strengthened.

Back to school

It was then quite literally 'back to the school classroom' for a Sibelius 6 'Computer Software Workshop' where Chris Wormald kept his 'unruly' pupils under control and led his class in a practical demonstration of the workings of the software.

No unruly pupils for Chris though when he conducted Smithills School Senior Brass Band in concert as a grand finale to the day's convention.

Talent

A NABBC spokesperson told 4BR: "What a talented band and with an average age of just 14.1 years. The band with its varied programme lived up to its excellent reputation and is a credit to the school and a great ambassador for the brass band movement in general."

At the close Dr.Roy Newsome thanked all those who had contributed to the day and in particular Andrew White for all he had done in arranging and ensuring the smooth running of the convention.

Rushden Town Band

November 25 • Trombone Player. This friendly band is looking for a tenor trombone player to join its ranks. The band enjoys playing at regular concerts each year and is off to the Rhineland next year on its second tour.


Chinnor Silver

November 25 • You need to be quick, we are almost full but just require Eb bass and percussion. We are a friendly, welcoming and ambitious band and start 2025 at the top of our second section ranking table. We rehearse on a Wed evening in our own bandroom in Chinnor.


Hathersage Band

November 25 • Hathersage Brass Band is a thriving community band. We enjoy making music and have a good gig schedule. An opportunity has arisen for the right person to join our Principal Cornet Ed as co-principal. Are you up for the challenge? This is our only vacancy.
