The National Association of Brass Band Conductors held its Annual Convention on Sunday the 16th May at Bispham High School, Arts College, Blackpool when it was reported that a great day was had by all.

Cornet workshop

With the formalities of the association's AGM completed it was time for the first workshop of the day when, sponsored by Yamaha UK, Russell Gray presented a 'Cornet Workshop' and showed that a band, well at least a cornet section, didn't actually need a conductor to bring them in or indeed finish together, even with their eyes closed!

The challenge, especially for lower section bands, to actually be able to put together a percussion team to meet the requirements of a testpiece was recognised by those present4BR

Percussion highlight

A 'Percussion Workshop' followed, directed by Andrea Price, Black Dyke's principal percussionist. This was a real " hands-on" experience as Andrea triggered a number of thoughts and ideas as to how the percussion sections of bands might be strengthened.

The challenge, especially for lower section bands, to actually be able to put together a percussion team to meet the requirements of a testpiece was recognised by those present.

Back to school

It was then quite literally 'back to the school classroom' for a Sibelius 6 'Computer Software Workshop' where Chris Wormald kept his 'unruly' pupils under control and led his class in a practical demonstration of the workings of the software.

No unruly pupils for Chris though when he conducted Smithills School Senior Brass Band in concert as a grand finale to the day's convention.

Talent

A NABBC spokesperson told 4BR: "What a talented band and with an average age of just 14.1 years. The band with its varied programme lived up to its excellent reputation and is a credit to the school and a great ambassador for the brass band movement in general."

At the close Dr.Roy Newsome thanked all those who had contributed to the day and in particular Andrew White for all he had done in arranging and ensuring the smooth running of the convention.
