Withington set for Summer School

Allan Withington is starting to put the final touches to his Conductor's Summer School in Leewaurden in Holland.

Following the success of last year's event, Allan Withington's Conductors Summer School will once again take place in Leeuwarden, Holland, between 27th June and 3rd July.

Popular

The basic recipe for the increasingly popular course will be the same as last year, with Robin Dewhurst assisting Allan on the creative side of the number innovative approaches that are a feature of the enjoyable week.

Great success

Speaking to 4BR Allan said: "Last year's event was a great success, and we have built on that for this year. The course gives the students a chance not only to develop their conducting and rehearsal skills but to create a full length, workable concert within the space of five days."

The course is open everyone, regardless of levels of ability and each student will receive `one to one` tuition in order to cater for and develop their own ability. All students will then take part in the final concert with Soli Brass.

The organizers are looking at new venues to stage the final concert, including a disused jail in Leeuwarden4BR

Dynamic

Allan hopes the dynamics of the course will just as succesful as last year: "The chemistry within the group of students was perfect. So on a social level we couldn`t really fail and it was fascinating to see the students rebound off each other with interesting observations, ideas and points of view."

New venues

The organizers are looking at new venues to stage the final concert, including a disused jail in Leeuwarden.

The course will include the occasional surprise and a discussion as to where the students see the brass band movement in 20 years’ time, and what we can do to realize that vision.

As well as conducting and rehearsing technique students, Allan and Robin will be expected to piece together the second half of the final concert under the description of 'Creative Programme Planning'.

Unconventional

Allan added: "Robin Dewhurst will provide an excellent opportunity for the more traditional minded students to think outside the box, with his unconventional programming ideas and enlightening lectures."

Some of the music to be used in course will be sent to the students before the start, other music will be received on arrival, with Allan conducting assignments which will be based on each student's ability.

Very enjoyable

Allan promises that the week will be challenging, hard work, interesting and hopefully very enjoyable.

The bulk of the course takes place in a music school overlooking the town square of Leeuwarden and about 5 mins’ walk, past the town's bars and restaurants, from where the students will stay.
