Besson Euphonium Artist Matthew van Emmerik has been appointed euphonium, chamber and low brass lecturer at Melbourne University, beginning March this year.
A First
This is a first for an institution in Victoria and an encouraging step towards the improvement of euphonium education, and brass music educational opportunities in general.
CD
This news coincides with Matthews latest CD release with Summit Records the well known U.S based record company. This is a huge feat in itself as it makes Matthew the first Australian artist to be released under their label.
The disk entitled 'Utaki — The Sacred Grove' features euphonium repertoire never recorded before in chamber music settings. Groups featured include the Flinders String Quartet, Australian Chamber Brass and piano accompaniment.
Two world premiere Australian works head up the CD, and the title track 'Utaki — The Sacred Grove', was composed by Melbourne Composer Mike Fitzpatrick, which won the Harvey Phillips International Award for composition at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference (ITEC) in 2008.
