4BR has been informed of the death of David James.
David passed away on Friday evening, 12th February. He was 68.
Influential
David James was born in South Wales, and was a former principal cornet of the National Youth Band of Great Britain.
He studied trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music and became Principal Trumpet of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He also became one of the most influential brass teachers of his generation, as well as a successful band trainer and conductor.
Happy
A proud Welshman, his connection and affection to Scotland remained throughout his life, conducting many of Scotland’s leading bands as well as encouraging the development of a host of ensembles in the lower sections too. He lived happily with his wife Rita in Stonehaven for many years.
Unsurpassed
His association with some of the leading championship bands in Great Britain was unsurpassed – from Carlton Main and Grimethorpe Colliery to Yorkshire Imperial Metals, Rigid Containers, Bo’ness & Carriden, Kirkintilloch and many, many more.
He was a good friend and friend of thousands in the brass worldAlan Hope
Immense
Peter Fraser of the Kirkintilloch Band told 4BR: "David had been ill for some time but always managed to get to as many events as possible and maintained his interest in his beloved brass bands. His contribution was immense, with the many pupils he taught and bands he conducted."
Alan Hope told 4BR: "He was a good friend and friend of thousands in the brass world."
Friend
Peter asked 4BR to print a verse that he felt summed up David as a man and friend to the banding world:
I pass this way but once,
Therefore, if there is anything I can do,
Any kindness I can show,
Let me do it now, I shall not pass this way again.
