Results: 2009 Danish National Championship

There is a new champion in Denmark as Concord returns to victory after a 37 year gap, thanks in no small way to Russell Gray.

After a string of seven consecutive victories at the Danish Nationals, Lyngby-Taarbaek’s long reign as National Champions came to an end on the weekend.

37 year wait

Conducted by Russell Gray, Concord Brass Band won its first National title since 1972 — a period of 37 years — and will now go one to represent Denmark at the 2010 European Championships in Linz, Austria.

Salute to Youth

Their performance of the set work, Gilbert Vinter’s 'Salute to Youth' and their own choice selection of Martin Ellerby’s 'Elgar Variations' was enough to give them a narrow victory over the reigning champion, who chose to defend their title by playing 'The Promised Land' by Kenneth Downie.

In third place came Århus Brass, who picked Philip Wilby’s '…Dove Descending' as their own choice selection.
