New direction for Wingates

Not at the helm, but on the Sat Nav for lost drivers...

Wingates

There was something of a first revealed in the banding world a couple of weeks ago in the Westhoughton area, with the decision of the local council to make sure people know just where they are.

Only band

Road signs displaying, "Welcome to Wingates. Home of the world famous brass band" now appear in the town — believed to be the only band in the country to be recognised on road signs by a local authority.

For many years to come, the bandsmen and women of Wingates will take great pride in seeing the signs as they drive to their regular rehearsal sessions at our Wingates Square headquartersWingates Band

History

Wingates President David Kaye told the local newspaper: "Our band’s history spans 136 years and another exciting chapter in our long and colourful story has just been written. For many years to come, the bandsmen and women of Wingates will take great pride in seeing the signs as they drive to their regular rehearsal sessions at our Wingates Square headquarters."

Westhoughton Town Council agreed to fund three signs in the town.

Marvellous

Town Council leader Cllr David Chadwick added: "I think it is marvellous we are able to recognise the band and the important role it has in the heritage of our town."
