Collinson zips in for Minnesota

British composer Rob Collinson has used a novel approach to get a name for his latest American composition

Sheldon

As part of its 20th birthday celebrations this year, the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band of Red Wing, Minnesota, commissioned British composer Rob Collinson to write a work for their anniversary concert to be held August 1st.

Score 55066

Audience interest in the new composition was heightened by a competition to name the piece, as the composer's initial title for the work, 'Score 55066' reflected the zip code of Red Wing.

However, the music now has its official title after the band received 54 suggestions, and the composer selected two favorites, which he combined to name the piece: 'March of the Polished Brass: The Sheldon Main Street Strut.'

We're excited to be playing this fun new piece and are thrilled to have this opportunity to work with Rob during our final week of preparationBrian Borovsky

Same person

Interestingly, both the main title and the subtitle were suggested by the same person on two separate occasions — long time band supporter Lois Christenson of Red Wing, who will receive a framed, autographed front page of the score at the premiere performance.

Rob has traveled to the USA to work with the band prior to the premiere.

Excited

Brian Borovsky, principal euphonium and chairman of the band’s board, commented to 4BR: "We’re excited to be playing this fun new piece and are thrilled to have this opportunity to work with Rob during our final week of preparation."
