Motor City Brass Band has announced the winners of its 2009 Solo & Scholarship Competition.
Scholorship
The competition draws high school brass players from around Southeastern Michigan to compete for a $500.00 scholarship and the opportunity to perform a solo with the band.
Grand prize
The Grand Prize was awarded to Kaitie Schoenfeldt (Euphonium) of Saline High School in Saline who wowed the judges with a superbly executed performance of Herman Bellstedt’s 'Napoli'.
She studies Euphonium with Matt Tropman, a lecturer in low brass at Eastern Michigan University, and receives training from her band director at Saline High School, Nate Lampman.

Runners up
Finishing close behind were runners up, Justin Makarewicz (Trumpet) and Joe L’Esperance (Horn). Both received a $100 scholarship.
Justin, who attends Eisenhower High School in Shelby Township, MI, performed an excellent rendition of 'Concerto' by Alexander Arutunian.
Joe, of Dakota High School in Macomb, delighted the judges with his performance of En Forêt by Eugéne Bozza. He receives instruction from Bryan Kennedy, Principal Horn player for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and his band director, Risa Hsu.
