David Childs has announced that he has accepted the role as Professor of Euphonium at the University of North Texas in Dallas, as well as revealing that he will be featured in one of this year's Proms Concerts from the Royal Albert Hall in London.

August start

The University of North Texas College of Music is one of America's largest and most respected comprehensive music schools. David has worked twice with the UNT euphonium studio in recent months, and will begin his formal role in August, taking over from Regent Professor, Brian Bowman.

The faculty includes a renowned rota of internationally acclaimed artists and scholars in composition, conducting, ethnomusicology, music education, music entrepreneurship, music history, music theory and performance, whilst alumni can be found around the musical world.

Exciting new chapter

David told 4BR: "I look forward to this exciting new chapter and am thrilled to have the university's support in combining an international solo career with a teaching post of this magnitude.

Over the last two decades Dr. Brian Bowman has made UNT an iconic institution for euphonium study, so to follow in his footsteps is a huge honour."

Announcing the news, John W. Richmond, Ph.D. Professor and Dean of the College of Music University of North Texas: "We are pleased to welcome David Childs as a tenured Full Professor of Euphonium in the University of North Texas College of Music, Division of Instrumental Studies."

At present 4BR understands that there has been no formal decision made over David's future conducting role at Butlins and West of England Area champion Flowers Band.

Proms appearance

The news follows the announcement that the Besson artist will also feature in the third Promenade Concert of the year at the Royal Albert Hall.

Prom 3 on July 15th will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the BBC Young Musician competition with a concert featuring illustrious past winners and finalists, including Nicola Benedetti, Freddy Kempf, Natalie Clein, Colin Currie and this year's champion.

David will be featured in a special programme that will include Saint-Saens' 'Carnival of the Animals', Ravel's 'Tzigane', MacMillan's 'Britannia' and three new commissions: Ben Foster's 'Fantasia on the Young Musician Theme', David Bruce's 'Sidechaining' and Iain Farrington's 'Gershwinicity', in which David will be spotlighted as one of several soloists.

Delighted

Having previously performed as a soloist at the BBC Proms, he told 4BR: "I'm very honoured to be involved in a concert with so many fine musicians.

My BBC Young Musician of the Year experience contributed hugely to the career I enjoy today and I'm delighted to be celebrating the competition's 40th anniversary in such esteemed company."

In 2000 David won the brass final of the BBC Young Musician earning him the opportunity to perform Philip Wilby's 'Euphonium Concerto' with the BBC Philharmonic under Yan Pascal Tortelier in the televised final.
