Death of former Grimethorpe star

The death of former Grimethorpe horn player Bryan Smith has been announced.

Grimethorpe

It has been reported that Bryan Smith, former principal horn with Grimethorpe Colliery Band, and regarded by many as one of the finest exponents of the instrument, died on the 18th June.

Character

One of life’s great characters, who always had a wicked twinkle in his eye, he will be sadly missed by his many friends and admirers.

Many will have tremendous memories of a beautiful sound, allied to his innate musicianship — it was said he could bring a tear to a glass eyeDavid James

Memories

As former collegue David James told 4BR: "Many will have tremendous memories of a beautiful sound, allied to his innate musicianship — it was said he could bring a tear to a glass eye."

Deepest sympathies are with his wonderful wife Elsie and his daughter Kim, son Keith, and his six grandchildren. He had been ill for a number of years and Elsie was his administering angel, who kept him going.

Funeral details

The funeral will be at St. Luke’s Church Grimethorpe at 11.15am, Wednesday 1st July, then Ardsley Crematorium at 12.30pm.

No flowers, but donations would be most gratefully received at Ward 27 Barnsley Hospital.
