Salvationist Publishing and Supplies
In the last couple of years the influence of the Salvation Army
in the general banding world has started to become much more pronounced.
It is one of the best things that has ever happened to our movement.
The increase in quality CD releases through their partnership
with Doyen Recordings as well as their own “in house” output,
their sponsorship of major concert events and their development
of new ideas to help promote the movement as a whole shows that
it is an influence that should be encouraged further.
In 2003 they
showed just why, with the release of the DVD of the European Brass
Band Championships in Bergen. This was a professionally engineered
release – intelligently
produced both technically and musically, with features and interviews
that enhanced the coverage of the excellent performances from
the bands both at the contest and at the Gala Concert.
It was tremendously enjoyable and caught the celebratory mood
of the weekend to the full. The march of technology is unremitting,
and the brass band movement has at times been left behind, but the
involvement of SP&S shows the way forward.
The work of SP&S under Trevor
Caffull has shown us that we now have a driving force that can
only do us good, and with a second DVD of the excellent Eric Ball
Centenary Celebration Concert ready to be bought in the same large
numbers as the European, a new era in the promotion of the brass
band world has begun in fine style.
We can only thank them for their
efforts to date, and they are the deserved recipients of the
4BR Special Award.
