2003 4BR Awards: Band CD of the Year

Read our nominations below for the above category. To vote, follow the links at the bottom of this page.

It seems that each new year brings a whole batch of better and better brass band CD’s to the market place. Whereas a few years ago you could count the real class releases on the fingers of one hand, the last couple of years have brought a whole raft of fine releases from both bands and soloists. 2003 has been a great year, with quality releases from the best bands in the world right down to more humble but equally no less impressive offerings from bands who have taken the brave step of producing their own.

These are the top five we thought were the best releases from the bands themselves that we cast a critical ear over during 2003.

Bourgeios in BrassBourgeios in Brass
Yorkshire Building Society
Polyphonic Recordings: SFZ113

An amazing achievement from David King and his YBS team. A great composer for brass given thunderously epic treatment from both the conductor and his players.

Eric Ball - Festival MusicEric Ball - Festival Music
Black Dyke
Doyen Recordings: CD 147

A tremendous release from Nicholas Childs and Black Dyke that gives our greatest original composer a worthy and memorable musical memorial for future generations to enjoy.

Brass Band Classics Volume IIBrass Band Classics Volume II
BAYV Cory
Doyen Recordings: CD 155

Robert Childs and BAYV Cory take some of the greatest test pieces ever written or arranged for brass band and give them spankingly good concert performances.

Art of the StatesArt of the States
Eikanger Bjorsvik Musikklag
Doyen Recordings: CD152

Nobody does it better. Eikanger have ripped up the old entertainment blue print and shown the banding world the way forward for the rest of the 21st Century.

The Kingdom TriumphantThe Kingdom Triumphant
International Staff Band of the Salvation Army
SPS Recordings: CD SPS169

A fantastically impressive and deeply satisfying release from the ISB under Stephen Cobb. The understanding and delivery of the musical subject matter is quite something.

Previous winners:
2002: The Heaton Collection - Black Dyke and the International Staff Band
2001: Butterworth – Black Dyke
